Shoe Talk with Lo
How did your passion for shoes start?
It wasn’t shoes at first—I just wanted to work with my hands and make something I could enjoy. I made a pair of leather house moccasins, and I loved being able to walk in something I created. That was the spark.
How did you get into the world of shoe repair?
I apprenticed with a shoemaker for a year (unpaid), then looked for work in the male-dominated shoe repair industry. I found Sole Survivor, and when the previous owner was ready to sell, I took a leap and bought the business. Eight years later, we're still saving soles!

What’s your favourite part of what you do?
Working with my hands and solving a new challenge every day. Each repair is unique and keeps me present and engaged.
What’s your favourite pair of shoes and why?
My Maison Margiela Tabi boots. The craftsmanship is incredible, and the leather is buttery soft. They’re durable if properly cared for, and I love working on them.

Favourite Walter’s product?
The leather protector cream—it conditions leather evenly with just a little product. It gives a nice shine when buffed, perfect for quick upkeep without polish.
What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a pair of shoes?
$400 on a pair of Trippen shoes about 7 years ago—and I still love them!
High top or low?
I always say, “With every HIGH there is a LO,” but in this case—HIGH TOP all the way!
